…. yes the TNCA aka Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has about 132 teams in leagues starting from 1st Division Leage, 2nd Division, 3rd Division A & B, 4th Division A, B & C, 5th Division A, B, C & D, totally 11 league teams, which fight among themselves for their respective shields.
Many teams have every interesting names like Book Sellers XI, Mambalam Mosquitoes, Varsity Occasionals, Egmore Excelsiors, Freelancers XI, Eccentrics XI for their teams.
One such game on a Sunday morning at the YMCA ground, Nandanam.
Over 30 years back, First Division league had a super following from the cricket fans of Chennai. I have done ground hopping from Marina to Chepauk to University Union to Vivekananda to watch players like Venkat, TE Sreenivasan, K Srikkanth, T A Sekhar, Bharathkumar, W V Raman, NP Madhavan, R Madhavan, Bharat Reddy (father of cine star Shreya Reddy) and our own Triplicane hero S R Sampath who played for Southern Railways in the 1st division league.
We used to have a full house crowd at Marina to watch matches involving top teams like Alwarpet, India Pistons, State Bank, IOB etc.
Ram: Also the Soma Ground group (off Usman Road Tnagar) had / has a big cricket community.
Cricket seems very fun. Have not seen any games here in New York.
