Velachery, the common name for a locality in Chennai was actually called / known as “Vedasreni”. Realised when i saw this sign board at the Sri Dandeeswarar Temple there.
The term Cheri is not mean as you say slum, but it is a place where people live together. (in tamil, serri or Cheri means Serndhu iruthal or serndhu irukkum idam)
